Sentence
A set of words that is complete in itself

A string of words which creates a clause

Noun phrase
A determiner followed by a premodifier followed by a head noun (e.g. 'the silver car')

Prepositional phrase
A phrase that begins with a preposition (e.g. 'under the bridge')

Must have a main verb, often follow an S-V-O, S-V-C or S-V-O-C-A pattern

Main clause
Independent, can stand and be understood on its own

Dependent (subordinate) clause
Begins with a subordinating conjunction and can't be understood in isolation

Relative clause
Type of subordinate clause, provides extra information about one of the nouns in the clause through the use of a relative pronoun

Can be recognised by an infinitive, present participle or past participle verb at the beginning of the clause

A type of subordinate clause that usually begins with 'if' or 'unless'

Comparative clause
A subordinate clause type that creates either equal or unequal comparison by using 'as' (equal) or 'than' (unequal)

The main topic/thing in a sentence - usually placed at the beginning

Object
The thing in a sentence that has something happen to it as a result of the action of the subject - usually appears at end

Verb
Verb/verb phrase in a sentence, describes what is happening and is usually found in the middle

Adverbial
Describes where, why and how something happens - usually appears at end

Complement
Provides additional information about either the subject or the object of a sentence

Doesn't contain a main verb or follow a classical pattern
