Chen Boda

Political leader during and after the Civil War. Helped to draft the First 5YP. Tried moderate Mao's ideas. Sympathised with Peng and joined forces with Zhou and Deng. Lost power after Mao's death- nothing too dramatic.

Deng Xiaoping

Oversaw internal security and intelligence during 40s and the Cultural Revolution. Learnt his methods from the NKVD in Moscow in the 30s. Very brutal. Removed the landlords and dissidents. Expelled from the party after Mao died.
Kang Sheng

Deputy head of the Central Economic and Financial Commission under Chen Yun. Regarded as one of the main founders of China's soviet economy. Vocal about his dislike of the Cultural Revolution but remained in government until his death in 1974.
Li Fuchun

`Vice Chairman of the CCP. Minister of National Defence. Designator successor of Mao between '69 and '71. Lead the military. Ran away when he started become unpopular but died in a plane crash.
Lin Biao

Went from being the 3rd most powerful man in China to being purged in 1966after he angered Mao with his opposing political opinions. He disappeared in '68 and was labelled "commander of China's bourgeois headquarters". Regularly beaten.
Liu Shaoqi

General of the PLA. Served great military purpose in the Civil War. Purged for his anti- Cultural Revolution beliefs and attempted suicide in 1966.
Lui Ruiqing

Chairman of East China. Joined forces with Gao Gang to remove Liu Shaoqi but ended up being purged. Suffered from Schizophrenia.
