Balanced diet
A diet that contains adequate amounts of all the necessary nutrients required for healthy growth and activity.

Malnourished
The condition where the body does not get a balanced diet.

Metabolic rate
The rate at which chemical reactions occur in the cells of the body.

Obese
Very overweight, with a BMI of over 30.

Pathogens
Microorganism that causes disease.

Epidemic
When more cases of an infectious disease are being recorded than what would normally be expected.

Pandemic
When more cases of an infectious disease are being recorded than normal in a number of different countries.

White blood cells
A blood cell which is involved in the immune system of the body, engulfing bacteria, making antibodies and making antitoxins.

Immune system
The body system which recognises and destroys foreign cells or proteins such as invading pathogens.

Anitbiotics
Drug that destroys bacteria inside the body without damaging human cells.

Culture medium
A substance growing the nutrients needed for microorganisms to grow.

Antigen
A protein covering the surface of a pathogen, which the immune system recognises as non-self.

Vaccination
Introducing small quantites of dead or inactive pathogens into the body to stimulate the white blood cells to produce antibodies that destroys the pathogen. This makes the person immune to future infection.

The dead or inactive pathogen material used in a vaccination.

An antibiotic resistant bacterium.
