Keeping healthy-Biology

?
what happens to your body if you take in too much energy or too few vitamins?
you can become malnourished. to much energy you can gain weight. too few vitamins you can develop difficiency diseases
1 of 17
why do people become obese?
because the enger they take in is greater than the energy they use.
2 of 17
why do starving people find it hard to walk?
they have too little engergy and may be suffereing frim a difficiency disease due to a lack of vitamins and minerals
3 of 17
name the food types found in a healthy diet. and what are they used for?
carbohydrates, fat and protein are used by the body to release energy and build cells. mineral ions and vitamins are needed to keep the body healthy.
4 of 17
how can people change their lifestyle to help lower their blood cholesterol levels?
they can increase the amount of exercise they do and reduce saturated fat intake
5 of 17
how do pathogens make you feel ill?
they produce toxins and damage cells
6 of 17
why did it take so long for others to accept the ideas of Semmelweiss?
no-one knew about bacteria and viruses
7 of 17
how are many pathogens prevented from entering the body?
the skin stops them (also mucus and stomach acid)
8 of 17
how do white blood cells defend the body?
they ingest pathogens, they produce antibodies, they produce antitoxins.
9 of 17
why are antibiotics only able to kill bacteria?
viruses are inside the body cells.
10 of 17
why do industrial labs use 35'c instead of 25'c like in schools?
the bacteria will grow at a faster rate.
11 of 17
how do you make sure that unwanted microorganisms do not contaminatea pure culture of bacteria?
heat all equipment, boil solutions and cover petri dishes or flasks.
12 of 17
why do some pathogens spread so rapidly?
very few poeple are immune to the new pathogen.
13 of 17
how does natural selection cause resistant populations of bacteria to develop?
the antibiotics kill the non resistant strains which allows the resistant ones to survive and multiply
14 of 17
what is meant by vaccination?
injection (or oral drops) of dead or incative forms of a pathogen to stimulate white bood cells to produce antibodies.
15 of 17
what are the advantages and disadvantages of a vaccination?
Advantages-protects poeple from seriouse diseases which could cause death. Disadvantages- may cause side effects in a few people
16 of 17
why do we need to develop new medicines?
some pathogens are resistant to drugs. new pathogens arise by mutation.
