The Human Body is capable of the following types of movements at the joints:

FLEXION
Bending (Bringing the bones together).

EXTENTION
Straightening (Moving bones apart).

ABDUCTION
Movement away from the centre (or mid-line) of the body (to the side).

ADDUCTION
To bring towards the centre of the body.

ROTATION- MEDIAL, INTERNAL OR INWARD
To rotate or turn inwards.

ROTATION- LATERAL, EXTERNAL OR OUTWARD
To rotate or turn outwards.

CIRCUMDUCTION/ CIRCUMROTATION
A movement in a circular action (e.g. the arm cirling at the shoulder joint). Circumduction is a combination of abduction, adduction, flexion and extension.

INVERSION
Where the forefoot is turned inwards towards the middle of the body, also known as 'sickling'.
8 of 11
EVERSION
Where the forefoot is turned outwards away from the middle of the body, also known as 'rolling out'.

DORSIFLEXION
Movement of the top of the foot towards the tibia, also called 'flexing' the foot.

PLANTARFLEXION
Movement of the sole of the foot downwards (i.e. pionting the foot- planting it down).
