Joining Metals- Permanent Fixings

?
Name some examples of permanent metal joins.
Soldering, Brazing, Welding (Gas, Arc, MIG, Spot)
1 of 14
What does soldering use?
Soldering uses a low melting point metal called solder and an electrically heated tool called a soldering iron.
2 of 14
What is Brazing sometimes called?
Brazing is sometimes called "hard soldering".
3 of 14
What does Brazing Use?
Brazing uses Brazing Rods which melt at 800 degrees, brass filler metal whih bonds to steel and a gas torch.
4 of 14
What is Gas welding formally called?
Gas Welding is formally known as Oxy-Acetylene Welding
5 of 14
What does Gas Welding Use?
Gas Welding uses two gasses (oxygen and acetylene) that burn at 2000 degrees to melt a mild steel welding rod.
6 of 14
How does Gas Welding Work?
Gas Welding works by the very hot flame melting the steel rod and creating a weldpool of molten metal. The welding rod is fed into this to make the weld.
7 of 14
What do Arc Welding and MIG Welding both use?
Arc Welding and MIG Welding use electrical currents to form a high temperature electric arc which melts the steel filler rod.
8 of 14
What does MIG Stand for?
MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas
9 of 14
What are the advantages and disadvantages of MIG Welding?
Easier to learn than gas, lower heat therefore ;ess distortion of metal HOWEVER it needs more electrical contact so metal needs to be clean
10 of 14
What does Arc Welding Use?
Arc Welding uses a short steel rod coated in flux as the rod touches the work peice an electric arc is formed the flux coats the weld keepig oxygen out.
11 of 14
What are one of the dangers of Arc Welding?
In Arc Welding, UV Rays are created with could potentially be very dangerous to eyesight so a special mask is worn.
12 of 14
What does spot welding use?
Spot Welding uses thin sheets of steel and two electrodes which push together and a round weld point is formed inside.
13 of 14
Where is spot welding used?
Spot Welding is used in car manufacturing
