The flat land meant the tsunami could travel for miles uninterrupted. This meant it reached more densely populated areas, meaning more deaths.

How was the Tsunami caused?
At a destructive plate boundary, the Pacific Plate was being subducted under the Eurasian Plate. The tsunami was caused by the Eurasian Plate pushing up water.

What were the immediate responses to the tsunami?
The emergency services helped to find injured/trapped people. The army helped to find trapped people, and also tried to clear up dead bodies to prevent disease. Other countries provided funds to repair damage.

what were the long term responses to the tsunami?
Property/ infrastructure was rebuilt eg. railways,roads,housing- as they are important to the economy and socially. Defences were improved to minimise damage in future.

4 trains went missing (were washed out to sea), railway lines were damaged. The Tohoku Expressway reopened on 24th March 2011
