What was the state of Italy in 1796?
Lombardy and Venetia were ruled by Austria. The House of Savoy was the monarchy of Piedmont. Tuscany, Modena and Parma were ruled by the duchies. The Papal states were ruled by the Pope. The Kingdom of Naples was under Bourbon rule. Austrian power.

What happened in 1789?
The French revolution. Austria went to war with France as they worried France would get too powerful - the Austrians lost and Napoleon came into power.

In the 1800s, Napoleon declared himself King of Italy.... But what did this mean?
He overthrew all the rulers and created equality for all under his non-religious government. He forbade torture and set up a Roman Republic under French control. Many Italians conscripted into the French army and mainly the middle class benefited.

What Happened in 1815?
The French lost their power of Italy because Napoleon was overthrown in the Battle of Waterloo. This led to the Congress of Vienna in which the big powers restored the 8 Italian states and previous rulers.
