What is an online community?

How is social media used as an online community?
Sites like Facebook are used to share content and communicate with others. Users often create groups based on friends, news, location or hobbies. Groups can often be open or closed which means users may need to request or be invited into the group.

How are blogs used as an online community?
Blogs, microblogs and vlogs can all be used as a way to share information, news, opinions/feelings about topics or hobbies. These are posted on the internet for other users to read and give comments and reviews. Successful people often get paid.

How are Wikis used as an online community?
Wikis are created and maintained by communities. People can create wiki pages providing factual information on a topic, famous person event or hobby which can be viewed and added to by other users.

What is the main disadvantage of wikis?
Users may not write factual information which could be misleading and untrue.

How are chatrooms used as an online community?
A chatroom is a virtual chatroom which hosts a number of users where they can talk to each other. These could be strangers or friends. People can communicate to make friends or get help/information.

Whats the main disadvantage with chatrooms?
Some users may not use them for friendly purposes and may use it in a negative way.

How are IMs used for online communities?
Similar to SMS, these allow users to communicate directly with other users in a private chat. This can be used to contact friends or family, or in a businesses case it could be used to communicate with customers or staff.

How can forums be used as an online community?
Forums allow users to ask questions to other users regarding an issue or problem. Other users can contribute to answering the question or could ask their own questions.

Replies can take a long time and information provided may not always be accurate?

Users often won't have to pay to use online communities however should expect to see advertisements.

Ease of use, Accessibility, Performance, Availability.

Why is Accessibility an implication?
This can be good for users, it will allow users in remote locations or users who are lonely/disabled to communicate with friends/family and strangers. People who may find it difficult to meet people in person can use online communities.

Why is availability an implication?
This can be a negative implication because users may not have strong internet connection, preventing them from performing their desired actions.

Why are customer needs an implication for businesses?
Businesses are able to communicate with staff and customers efficiently, Easier communication helps enhance their reputation and get an understanding of what people want. Also makes the business more available to customers.

Why is security an implication?
Systems and online community accounts may be at risk to being hacked - this could implement legal and reputation damages to the business. They need to ensure employees staff are trained on policies etc.

Data may need transferring to new systems from old ones, May need to communicate with existing systems.

Can create new jobs e.g customer service and new advertising opportunities. It changes the way businesses operate.

Why is cost an implication?
Businesses need to run and maintain their communities to ensure they have a strong presence, this costs money. Extra staff required. Implementing own system has large development costs.
