?
what is haemoglobin?
protein with a quaternary structure
1 of 5
what are heamoglobins?
groups of chemically similar molecules found in many different organisms
2 of 5
oxygen dissociation curve
further to the left = greater affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen / further to the right= lower affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen
3 of 5
loading, transport and unloading of oxygen in relation to the oxygen dissociation curve
The higher the rate of respiration - the more carbon dioxide the tissues produce - the lower the PH - the greater the haemoglobin shape change - the more readily oxygen is unloaded - the more oxygen is available for respiration
4 of 5
effects of carbon dioxide concentration
haemoglobin has reduced affinity for oxygen in the presence of CO2.** at the gas exchange surface the level of CO2 is low= affinity for haemoglobin is increased* In rapidly respiring tissues, levels of CO2 is high= affinity for haemoglobin is reduced
