ISA 2

?
what is osmosis?
movement of water from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential, through a partially permeable membrane
1 of 13
what does isotonic mean?
when the cell is the same concentration as the surrounding solution and therefore has the same water potential
2 of 13
what is the biuret test for proteins?
1.sample + equal volume of sodium hydroxide in test tube. 2.add few drops of very dilute copper (II) sulfate and gently mix. 3. purple =presence of peptide bonds (protein) remains blue = no protein
3 of 13
formation of a peptide bond
Amino acids combine by peptide bonds to form dipeptides. its a condensation reaction
4 of 13
primary structure
Sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide chain
5 of 13
secondary structure
hydrogen bonds form between the amino acids in the chain, this makes it coil into a alpha helix or fold into a beta pleated sheet
6 of 13
tertiary structure
more disulfide, ionic and hydrogen bonds form between different parts of the polypeptide chain, forming their final structure
7 of 13
quaternary structure
Way that two or more polypeptide chains are assembled together. final 3D structure of proteins
8 of 13
what are the fundamental differences between plant and animal cells?
plants have.....1) cell wall 2)chlorophyll and chloroplasts 3) vacuole
9 of 13
cell wall
for strength and rigidity- thick outer layer
10 of 13
chloroplasts
enclosed by double membranes, where photosynthesis takes place
11 of 13
structure of a palisade leaf cell as seen by an optical microscope
..
12 of 13
amino acid structure
