IONIC

?
Properties of ionic compounds
High melting and boiling points - Ionic bonds are very strong - a lot of energy is needed to break them. So ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points.

Properties of ionic compounds-Electricity
Conductive when liquid - Ions are charged particles, but ionic compounds can only conduct electricity if their ions are free to move. Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity when they are solid - only when dissolved in water or melted.

What is barium sulphate?
Barium sulfate is an example of an insoluble salt. It is used with patients in order to help diagnose problems with the intestine. Like bone and metal, barium sulfate shows up on an x-ray. A 'barium meal' is given to a patient and they are then x-ray
3 of 13
Why is barium sulphate used?
The barium sulfate will show up the shapes of the intestine. Doctors can then tell if there are any problems such as growths or lumps.
4 of 13
Why is barium sulphate safe?
Barium sulfate is toxic but it is safe to use because it is insoluble (does not dissolve). This prevents it from entering the blood.

What colour does potassium show in the flame test?
Lilac
6 of 13
What colour does lithium and copper show in the flame test?
Red and green

How can liquids be described as being?
Miscible and imiscible
8 of 13
What are imiscible liquids?
Immiscible means that the liquids don't dissolve in each other – oil and water are an example. It is possible to shake up the liquids and get them to mix but they soon separate.
9 of 13
How can imiscible liquids be seperated?
Separating immiscible liquids is done simply using a separating funnel.
10 of 13
How do you seperate miscible liquids?
Miscible liquids are harder to separate as they dissolve in each other. Miscible liquids are often separated using fractional distillation. This is possible as miscible liquids have different boiling points.

What is chromatography used for and what are some examples of its uses?
Chromatography can be used to separate mixtures of coloured compounds. Mixtures that are suitable for separation by chromatography include inks, dyes and colouring agents in food.

What is the Rf value?
Rf = distance moved by the compound ÷ distance moved by the solvent
