What is meant by the term ion?
A ion is an atom with a positive or negative charge
1 of 17
What is a cation?
An ion with a positive charge
2 of 17
What is anion?
ion with a negative charge
3 of 17
What is meant by ionic bond?
the electrostatic attraction between ions of a metal and non-metal in ionic bonding electrons are transferred
4 of 17
What do all ionic compounds form?
A large ionic lattice
5 of 17
What is a lattice?
A lattice is a regular and repeated arrangement of atom They look angular because they are made of crystal which can be split along certain angles
6 of 17
What are some properties of lattices?
-Closely packed ions of opposing charge in a regular lattice arrangement -Held together by very strong electrostatic forces of attraction - High melting/boiling point -Conduct electricity when molten or dissolved but not when solid
7 of 17
Why do they have high/low melting point?
Due to th strong electrostatic attraction between the bonds
8 of 17
Are they soluble?
Yes
9 of 17
Do they conduct electricity?
Yes only when molten/aqueous though due to free charged ions
10 of 17
What is Covalent Bonding?
When Non-Metals share pairs of electron to form a molecule
11 of 17
Where is there a strong electrostatic attraction?
Between the positive nuclei and negative electrons
12 of 17
Where is there a weak electrostatic attraction?
between the molecules
13 of 17
Why do molecules have low melting/boiling point?
The bonds between atoms in a covalent molecule are very strong due to electrostatic attraction between the positive nucleus and the negative electrons However there is a weak inter-molecular attraction so not a lot of energy is required to break a
14 of 17
Why are covalent molecules poor conductors?
they have no free electrons to carry charge
15 of 17
What is a polymer?
A long chain molecule that is made by joining many small molecules together.
16 of 17
Why do long polymers have high melting and boiling point?
Because there are more bond and inter molecular attraction and because they get tangled up
