A set of mutually supportive beliefs which helps people to make sense of and interpret the world.

Ideology
A set of attitudes, beliefs and values that tie a group together.

Religion
The belief in a higher power where a set of ideologies are followed in order to gain access to the afterlife - there is NO set definition of religion.

The fact religion has no definition is problematic as it makes it difficult to statistically measure who is and is not religious and also makes it difficult to track secularisation.

Substantive view of religion
Religion is exclusive - there will be no salvation for those who do not worship a God or a supernatural force. There is a clear line between religion and non-religion.

Functionalist view of religion
Religion is a conservative force and is never changing. Promotes social harmony.

Social constructivist view of religion
Religion is studied in terms of how it changes beliefs in society. There is no single definition of religion.

Exclusive view of religion -
There will be no salvation for non-Christian religions.

Inclusive view of religion -
All who are in non-Christian religions will still know God.

Social constructivist view of religion -
Understanding significance and meaning - developed in co-ordination with other humans.
