What is excretion?
The removal from the body of waste products from metabolism, some of which are toxic.

What are the main excretory products of the body?
Carbon dioxide- from respiration. Urea- made in the liver from excess amino acids.

How is CO2 excreted?
It goes into the bloodstream where it's carried as hydrogen carbonate ions to the lungs. At the lungs, it is converted back to CO2 and diffuses into the alveoli for breathing out.

Why does carbon dioxide need to be removed from the body?
So that enough oxygen can be carried in the RBC. So that carbaminohaemoglobin can't form. So excess CO2 doesn't dissolve in the plasma, forming carbonic acid.

What can respiratory acidosis be caused by?
Emphysema, bronchitis and asthma.

Why must nitrogenous waste (urea) be removed from the body?
The body can't store proteins/amino acids. They're transported to the liver where the toxic amino group is removed. This produces ammonia which is toxic and highly soluble. This is converted into urea which can be safely excreted.

What is egestion?
The removal of undigested food from the digestive system.
