What is the role of carbohydrates?
Energy store & supply. Can have structural roles.
2 of 14
What is the role of protein?
Can have structural roles. Used in metabolism.
3 of 14
What is the role of lipids?
Energy store & supply. Insulation. Membrane structure. Protection of organs.
4 of 14
What is the role of vitamins and minerals?
Needed to activate some enzymes in the body.
5 of 14
What is the role of nucleic acids?
Carry the genetic code & instructions for protein synthesis.
6 of 14
What is the role of water?
It's a solvent which dissolves substances for reactions to take place. Makes up a large proportion of blood plasma and cell cytoplasm.
7 of 14
What is biochemistry?
Chemical reactions involving biological molecules.
8 of 14
What is metabolism?
Refers to the total of all the biochemical reactions occurring in an organism.
9 of 14
What is a catabolic reaction?
Reactions involving breaking larger molecules into smaller ones. Eg: digestion.
10 of 14
What is an anabolic reaction?
Reactions involving building smaller molecules into larger ones. Eg: joining glucose into glycogen.
11 of 14
What feature makes carbon a framework atom?
Its multiple bonding feature means it can form the basis of most biological molecules necessary for life.
12 of 14
What is a condensation reaction?
Biochemical reaction that links monomers together. Water is lost.
