What is psychobiology?
Biological basis of consciousness, NS, biology...
1 of 12
What is mentalism?
Aristotle believed in the non-material psyche, heart = mental capacities, believed the brains function was to lower the temperature of blood in our heart (mentalism).

What is dualism?
Descarte believed that the physical word is our body & mental realm which is our mind, our mind is not physical. Physical realm: no free will, body is a machine, mental realm: mind receives info from senses. He believed our nerves carry animal spirits (a

What did Galvani believe?
Animal electricity, concluded that movement can happen without the mind, with other stimuli, info in NS carried via electrical stimulation.
4 of 12
What is monism?
Reality is considered as a unified whole, mind = biological workings of the CNS.
5 of 12
What is asomatognosia?
Failure to recognise ones own body, can be caused from a stroke.
6 of 12
What is experimental ablation?
Remove damaged areas of the brain & observe behaviour (Flourens, 1800).
7 of 12
Describe Broca's area
Left frontal lobe- involved with motor memories, sequences of muscular movements to produce words, damage to this affected speech output but could still understand speech.
8 of 12
Describe Wernicke's area
Posterior part of left hemisphere- damage = impairment in auditory comprehension, involved with memories for sequences of sounds. Broca's & Wernicke's area must be connected by neural fibres to coordinate.

What is third type aphasia?
Produced by damage to the connection between Broca's & Wernicke's area, symptoms: problems with repeating words but they can speak and comprehend, they're aware of their deficit.

What is the WADA test?
Used to determine which cerebral hemisphere dominates language, tests each side of the brain separately for speech memory. Anaesthetic is injected to put one side of the brain to sleep then the patient is given a memory test.

What is distributed processing?
Different components of behaviour is processed in different brain areas.
