Intro to cog psych

?
Information-Processing Approach - start to finish
Stimulus -> attention - perception - thought processes - decision (series of modules) -> response/action (observable)
1 of 16
Info-Pro approach assumes what type of processing?
Serial + bottom-up (triggered by stimulus)
2 of 16
Criticism I-P-A =
1- not allow for parallel processing // 2- ignores top-down processing // 3- oversimplification
3 of 16
Experimental Cognitive Psychology - what is it?
studying behaviour in controlled lab settings (experimental manipulations) // E.C.P records behavioural measures such as reaction times or accuracy opposed to brain measures
4 of 16
Cognitive Neuropsychology - what is it?
studying cognition in brain damaged patients - aiming to find out which functions are affected and which are preserved when different brain regions are damaged
5 of 16
Main assumption of Cog Neuropsychology =
Modularity - assumption that cog system consists of mainly of independent separate modules/processors - each specialised for a given type of processing / notion that there's v limited interaction between modules - mainly serial processing
6 of 16
Strengths of Cog Neuropsychology
role played in informing theories of language // findings often have substantial impact on memory theories (e.g. Henry Molaison)
7 of 16
Henry Mollaison?
amnesic patient - LTM severely impaired, STM intact - provided support for 3 hypotheses
8 of 16
Weaknesses of Cog Neuropsychology
1 can't get pre vs. post measures of patients performance // 2 damage often affects multiple brain regions // 3 doesn't account for individual differences // 4 assumption of modularity = too strong // 5 too much emphasis on single-case studies
9 of 16
Cognitive Neuroscience - what is it?
Intensive study of the brain as well as behaviour, used to relate brain structure & function to cognitive processes // done by recording brain activity while p's do a task
10 of 16
Brain activity recorded at many levels - such as..? (1)
Single-cell recordings - (invasive) measuring a neutrons firing rate
11 of 16
Brain activity recorded at many levels - such as..? (2)
Brain imaging - measuring blood flow and oxygen consumption (fMRI)
12 of 16
Brain activity recorded at many levels - such as..? (3)
Electrophysiology - measuring large scale brain activity
13 of 16
Brain activity recorded at many levels - such as..?
Brain stimulation - measuring how cognition changes when stimulating certain brain regions
14 of 16
How many neurons in human brain? How many is each one connected with?
100 billion // 10,000 others
15 of 16
Describe where lobes are in brain.
Frontal - front // Parietal - middle/back at top // Temporal - middle/back at bottom // Occipital - back
