The Germans withdrew from Greec in 1944. Britain was running out of money to support Greece, so the USA helped out.

What is meant by the Truman Doctrine?
America will support anyone who is non-communist/anti-communist. Truman hates communism. He is going to send Money, Equipment and Advice to threatened countries.

What did Truman accept, aim for and his policy become known as?
He accepted that Eastern Europe was communist, his aim was to stop communism spreading any further and his policy became known as the Policy of Containment, as he wished to contain communism.

When the Truman doctrine is put into action is is the Marshall Plan. Who did Truman send to Europe? Why?
Truman sent General George Marshall, the US secretary of state, to Europe to report back to him, because Truman believed that Communism suceeded when people faced Poverty and Hardship.

What did General George Marshall find out?
He found out that there was lots of Refugee's, a shortage of food and clothing, a shortage of fuel, big debts from the war effort, a lot of damage caused by the war, high costs of rebuilding and lots of homeless people.

What was Marshall's answer?
He said it would take 17billion $ to fix everything.

What did Congress say?
Congress said NO to the 17 billion $ but when Jan Masaryk was killed and Czechoslvakia went 'under' they changed their minds and said YES.

Why did the USA introduce the Marshall plan? Political reasons.
To halt the spread of communism. To prevent extremism. To prevent revolution. To win friends in the European countries.

Why did the USA introduce the Marshall plan? Economic reasons.
To rebuild Europes economis strength. To create markets for American goods in the long and short term. To help the American economy. To make Europe dependant on the american dollar.

What does this achieve?
This helps European countries to start making their own money again, with their own money, communism will start looking less attractive.
