Origins of institutional aggression (Interpersonal factors-importation model)
Irwin and Cressey claim that prisoners bring their own social histories and traits into to prison with them, which influences their adaption to the prison environment. Prisoners are not 'blank slates' and many things would be imported into the prison

Peterson suggests that prisoner/patient aggression is a result of stressful and oppressive conditions of the institution itself. Including crowding which assumed to increase fear levels and staff experience.

A form of institutional bullying based on a tradition within many groups to discipline younger members and maintain a strict pecking order. These can spiral out of control i.e. Private Sychev who required an amputation of leg and genitalia.

Dehumanization
Although humans usually have inhibitions about killing fellow humans, but when the target group is dehumanized so their appear worthless animals and therefore not worthy of moral consideration.

Milgram believed the Holocaust was primarily the result of situational pressures that forced Nazi soilders to obey their leaders regardless of any personal moral repugnance.
