Input Devices for Standard Users

?
How does a keyboard work?
Under each key is a mini computer which transfers data to the processor. The processor then uses a keymap to identify the character and if the caps lock is pressed or not.

How does a ball computer mouse work?
A ball computer mouse works by having an x-axis wheel and a y-axis wheel. The wheels contain spokes which create a light beam. The distance the wheel has gone is measured by how many spokes there are.

How does an optical mouse work?
An optical mouse works by shining an LED onto your desk so the light bounces up again. As you move the mouse around, the patter created by the lens changes.

How does a capacitive touchscreen work?
Capacitive touchscreens work like a capacitor. By bringing your finger to the screen, you change the electrical field. It can be touched in more than one place at once and does not work with insulators (e.g. styluses)

How does a microphone work?
A microphone converts energy from one form to another. It converts sound waves to electrical energy. When the diaphragm vibrates, the other components vibrate. The vibrations are converted to an electrical current which becomes the audio signal.

How does a camera work?
The image is represented in a way which the computer understands. So, the image is made of 1s and 0s which represents the pixels that make up the image. A sensor changes light to an electrical charge.

How does a barcode scanner work?
Each 0-9 number has a different thickness of line and LED's reflect this to tell the computer how thick the line is. The computer can work out from this what the number is.

How does an RFID reader work?
The scanning antena outputs radio frequency signals to a fairly short range. These signals allow communication to the RFID tag and gives the RFID tag energy to communicate.
9 of 10
How do sensors work?
The sensor measaures a physical quantity and turns it to signals. It then reacts accordingly. Motion sensors detect motion and alerts the user about the movement within a set range.
