what is the reaction when sodium reacts with cold water
it fizzes on the surface
1 of 37
what is the reaction of magnesium and water
reacts very slowly with cold water to form the hydroxide
2 of 37
what is the reaction of magnesium and steam
magnesium water reacts more readily with steam to form the oxide
3 of 37

6 of 37
write the formula for silicon and oxygen
Si + O2(g) ----> SiO2(g)
7 of 37
write the formula for phosphorous and oxygen
4P + 5O2 ----> P4O10(g)
8 of 37
write the formula for sulphur and oxygen
S + O2(g)----> SO2(g)
9 of 37
Describe the melting point going from Na to Al and explain why
The melting point increases from Na to Al because the bigger charges on the cations makes the electrostatic forces stronger meaning higher lattice enthalpies of dissociation
10 of 37
why does SiO2 have a high melting and boiling point
it is a macromolecular covalent structure with many covalent bonds between atoms meaning high energy is needed to break strong covalent bonds
11 of 37
why does p4O10 and SO2 have low melting and boiling points
both simple molecular structure they have weaker inter molecular forces, there is a small electronegativity value between the oxygen and and the non metal atom , P4O10 has more atoms so more van der waals so higher MPs
12 of 37
what is formed when ionic oxides react with water
They produce hydroxide ions which are alkaline
13 of 37
what is the reaction between sodium oxide and water and its Ph
Na2O + H20---> Na+ + 2OH- ph is 13
14 of 37
what is the reaction between MgO and water and what is its Ph
MgO + H2O-----> Mg(OH)2 the Ph is 9
15 of 37
what is different about the reaction of magnesium when it reacts with water
it is only slightly soluble because of the stronger lattice meaning fewer OH- ions are given off so Ph is lower
16 of 37
whats the reaction of Al2O3 and water and its Ph
Al2O3 does not react in water because of it is a stronger lattice so it gives a neutral Ph of 7
17 of 37
what is the reaction of sulphur with water and what is its ph
because sulphur is a macromolecular structure it does not dissolve in water so it gives off a neutral ph of 7
18 of 37
what is the reaction between phosphorous and water and what is its ph
P4O10 + 6H2O ----> 4H3PO4 ph 0
19 of 37
what is the reaction between sulphur dioxide and water and what is the Ph
SO2 + H2O ----> H2SO3 ph3
20 of 37
What is the reaction between sulphur trioxide and water and what is the Ph
SO3 + H2O ----> H2SO4 ph0 as H+ is being added
21 of 37
what is special about aluminium oxide in an acid base reaction
it is amphoteric and can act as an acid or a base
22 of 37
How would you write out an acid base reaction
base + acid -----> salt + water
23 of 37
write out the reaction between aluminium oxide and sulphuric acid
Al2O3 + 3H2SO4----> Al(SO4)3+3H2O
24 of 37
write out the reaction for aluminium oxide and hcl
