Neutrophil
A blood effector cell involved in phagocytosis and the release of chemicals involved in inflammation. The most abundant leukocyte (WBC) and defends against bacteria and fungi

Basophil
A blood effector cell that has a similar function to mast cells. It is a rare leukocyte and protects against parasites and ticks

Eosinophil
A blood effector cell that destroys multicellular parasites and participates in immediate hypersensitivity reactions

Monocyte
A blood effector cell that carries out functions similar to macrophages. They can enter into tissues and transform into macrophages. They defend against intracellular bacteria and protozoans

Natural killer cell
A blood effector cell that binds directly and non-specifically to virus infected cells and kills them.

Macrophage
A tissue sentinel cell involved in phagocytosis, secretion of cytokines involved in inflammation and the differentiation of helper T cells, and the processing and presenting of antigens to helper T cells

Dendritic cell
Tissue sentinel cell involved in phagocytosis and antigen presentation

Mast cell
A tissue sentinel cell involved in the release of histamine and other chemicals involved in inflammation

B cell
Bind specific antigen to its membrane-bound antibodies before engulfing them and presenting the antigen to T helper cells via the MHC1 receptor. After activation, they are transformed into plasma cells which secrete antibodies or memory cells

Cytotoxic cell
Formerly CD8 T cells that have been presented with a foreign antigen via a MHC1 receptor. They directly kill infected cells (which have the same antigen) by releasing chemicals

T helper cell
Formerly CD4 T cells that were presented with a foreign antigen via an MHCII receptor. They activate B cells once presented with the foreign antigen, as well as NK cells and macrophages

Interferon
A type of cytokine which stimulates the production of proteins that inhibit viral replication
