What is an acute injury?
Occurs suddenly during activity

What are the symptoms of acute injuries?
Sudden pain, swelling, can't bear weight, restricted movement, protruding bone

What is a simple/closed fracture?
Clean break that doesn't penetrate through the skin

What is a compound/open fracture?
Soft tissue or skin is damaged, more risk of infection

What is a comminuted fracture?
Breaks in 3 or more places

Winding break

What is a longitudinal fracture?
Occurs along the length of the bone

What is a buckle fracture?
Occurs in children when bone deforms but doesn't break

What is a hairline fracture?
Partial fracture of bone that is difficult to detect

What is a greenstick fracture?
Occurs in children where break occurs down one side of bone, not a full break

What is a strain?
A torn muscle- muscle fibres are stretched too far and tear

End of the bone becomes dislodged at the joint

Ligament is stretched too far and tears

What is a chronic injury?
Caused from playing sport and occurs over a long period of time

What are the symptoms of chronic injury?
Pain when using, dull ache when resting, swelling

What is tendonitis?
Over-use injury that causes pain and inflammation at tendon- achilles tendon

What is a stress fracture?
Over-use injury where area becomes swollen and tender- muscle becomes fatigued and transfers the stress to the bone causing a tiny crack

What is tennis elbow?
Muscles and tendons in elbow become inflamed and tiny tears occur- pain is felt on outside of elbow

Lateral epicondylitis
