what does the nucleus contain?
chromosomes

what is a chromosome?
they are long coiled up length of a molecule called DNA

it is a long list of chemical instructions on how to build an organism

it is a short section of a chromosome (and so a short section of DNA)

they control many of our characteristics e.g. hair colour, eye colour etc

when the egg is fertilised the nucleus of the egg fuses with the nucleus of the sperm

the fertilised egg develops into an embryo with a mixture of the parents characteristics

the process by which genes are passed down from the parents to their offspring

a variation

any type of difference e.g. skin colour, height, weight

how do you get characteristic features?
you can get these from inheriting them from your parents or they can be environmental (caused by your surroundings)
