What is selective attention?
process of selecting relevant info from the display and filtering out any irrelevant info
1 of 16
Where does selective attention occur?
Short-term sensory store
2 of 16
How selective attention aid performance?
Speeds up decision making and reaction time/prevents info overload
3 of 16
How can it be improved?
highlight cues/direct attention to important parts of display/ learn to ignore irrelevant stimuli/increase motivation & arousal levels/ increase intensity of stimulus
4 of 16
What's the relationship between movement, response & reaction time?
movement time + reaction time= response time
5 of 16
What factors affect response time?
Gender (males= faster)/Age (older=slower)/ Intensity of stimulus/ previous experience of performer/ injury or fatigue of performer
6 of 16
What are the 3 processes in the perceptual mechanism?
Detection (registering stimulus by sense organ)/ Comparison (referring to memory and comparing to previously stored stimuli)/ Recognition (finding corresponding stimuli in memory)
7 of 16
What's an example of selective attention?
Ignoring background noise from crowd whilst focusing on where the ball is in hockey
8 of 16
What is reaction time?
Time taken to make a decision
9 of 16
What is response time?
Time from stimulus being given and end of response
10 of 16
What is movement time?
Time from initiation of movement to the end of movement
11 of 16
What is Hick's law?
More choices of responses, slower the reaction time (takes longer to decide)
12 of 16
What is the psychological refractory period?
Delay in response to a second stimulus
13 of 16
Why is there a delay between repsonses?
Single channel hypothesis/ player must complete response to first stimulus before attending to second one
14 of 16
How do you improve retention?
Make info meaningful (relate to past experiences)/ reinforce success (extrinsic rewards & intrinsic motivation)/ Chunking info/ Mental rehearsal
15 of 16
How do you improve reaction time?
Mental rehearsal/ improve anticipation of stimulus/ Purposeful practice (groove response)/ increase arousal & motivation/
