Programs and data for future use, transferring data to another location, archiving and backup
1 of 10
How do most computers store data?
Fixed storage (hard drives) for storage of data and programs as well as a variety of removable storage methods for backup and transferring data.
2 of 10
What types of storage medium exist?
Magnetic (hard and floppy discs, DAT tape), Optical (CD, DVD, Blu ray and HD DVD), Solid state (flash memory and USB sticks)
3 of 10
What are strengths and weaknesses of hard discs?
Very large storage capacities, relatively low cost, fast to read, extremely reliable, robust. For a computer to work properly there needs to be quite a lot of space left on it's hard drive after current data and programs have been stored.
4 of 10
What are strengths and weaknesses of Floppy disks?
Only hold 1.44MB of data, easily damaged and no very reliable.
5 of 10
What are strengths and weaknesses of DAT tapes?
Small in size but hold a lot of data, useful backup medium, often used to bakup servers. Slow to write and retrieve data, less reliable than hard drives.
6 of 10
What are strengths and weaknesses of optical storage?
ROM's are read only and are often used to supply software but no further data can be added, R's can only have data written to them once so are useful for backing up files, RW's can have data written to them many times and are used to transfer data.
7 of 10
What are strengths and weaknesses of flash memory?
Used for portable devices such as digital cameras for transferring data between machines and most systems will recognise the drie.
8 of 10
What should you think about when choosing your storage device?
The volume of data, purpose of storage, need for re-writing, size of device and speed of recovery of data.
9 of 10
What should you know at the end of this section?
Reasons for storing data, how/why computers store data, types of storage media, strengths and weakness of each types of storage, common uses for each types of medium, things to think about when choosing a storage method.
