What is the health and safety at work act?
Protects workers from things that could cause them harm or damage their health.

Employers must risk-assess the environment that their workers work in and take steps to reduce risk. What would this involve?
Indentifying the hazards and the risks they pose, putting safety precautions in place to reduce risks, training staff to work safely and deal with risks, checking often that the situation hasn't changed and encouraging staff to report problems.

What are display screen regulations?
Designed to safeguard people who use screens for a long period of time it includes both display screens and VDU's (visual display units).

What can cause back and spinal damage?
Sitting for long periods of time in an incorrect manner,

How can you avoid back damage?
Adjustable chairs with back support, monitors should tilt and swivel, keyboard should be adjustable, there should be enough work space, a foot and wrist rest may also be helpful.

What is a good set up for your work station?
Monitor should be about 20 inches from head and horizontal with eye line, wrists in a neutral stance with a footrest if needed, a document holder next to the screen, a chair that supports the small of the back and your arms at a 90 degree angle.

What is RSI?
Repetitive strain injury. Caused by long periods of computer use which results in pain and damage to joints, sometimes permanently.

How can you avoid RSI?
Height adjustable keyboard with a space in front of it, have good habits such as good wrist position and a gentle touch, use an ergonomic keyboard and an easy to reach mouse, have alternate input methods (eg: tracker ball).

How an the risk of eye strain and headaches from prolonged use of screens be reduced?
Monitors should have the ability to be tilted so that they can be adjusted for the user and moved away from glare. • Workers can ask for employers to pay for eye tests, but employees only need to pay for spectacles if it's proven that they are needed

What needs to be considered by a software designer to to reduce stress?
Colours should have good contrast and should be customisable, font sizes should be considered carefully, menus need to be laid out logically, there should be keyboard shortcuts, macros, a help option and a wide variety of input accepted.

How can stress be avoided in the work place?
No data monitoring of staff and their performance, sufficient interfaces or processing systems, robust systems, employers being reasonable about the targets that employees are expected to perform to.
