Biological approach
The approach to psychological disorders which assumes that psychological disorders are physical illnesses with physical causes.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Techniques to treat abnormality using concepts from the cognitive approach. The idea is that changing the way information is cognitively processed will result in a change in behaviour.

Deviation from ideal mental health
Rather than defining what is abnormal this approach defines what is different from regular health as abnormal.

Deviation from social norms
Under this approach, a person's thinking or behaving is classed as abnormal if it violates the rules about what is expected or acceptable behaviour in a particular social group.

Drugs
A medicine or other substance which induces a physiological effect when used. A biological method of treatment used to relieve symptoms of illnesses.

ECT
Electroconvulsive therapy, a procedure in which electric currents are passed through the breain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure.

Failure to function adequately
Under this definition, a person is considered abnormal if they are unable to cope with the demands of everyday life.

Psychoanalysis
A system of psychological theory and therapy aiming to treat mental disorders by investigating the conscious & unconscious elements of the mind & bringing repressed fears & conflicts to the conscious mind by techniques like dream interpretation.

Behavioural approach
A model of abnormality that argues abnormal behaviours are learnt in the same way that all behaviours are lerant- through classical and operant conditioning.

Cognitive approach
Assumes behaviours are controlled by thoughts and beliefs. So, irrational thoughts and beliefs cause abnormal behaviours.

Psychodynamic approach
Based on Freud's division of personality into the id, ego and superego. Also uses stages of development (oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital stages). Suggests conflict & anxiety may occur due to lack of development in the mind.

Systematic de-sensitisation
A treatment for phobias in which the patient is exposed to progressively more anxiety-provoking stimuli and taught relaxation techniques.
