INCREASING SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIES OF WATER - KENYA

?
What is happening with Kenya in regards to water?
- LIC. - Hot, dry climate. - Most rain falls in just a few heavy downpours each yr. - Most rivers only flow through the rainy season (dry season=water evaporates). - Difficult for rural communities to store water for future use.

What have people in Kenya's Machakos District been helped to build?
- Sand dams, which now give them access to water all yr round.
2 of 5
What happens in the rainy season?
- Low dam (1m high) built across river.-Rainy season=water flowing=coarse material (e.g. sand) is trapped behind dam. - Water gets trapped between sand particles (1/3 of what is trapped behind dam is water).
3 of 5
What happens in the dry season?
-Sand prevents water from being evaporated by hot sun during dry season.-When river stops flowing, water can be extracted from sand by digging well, piping water through dam to tap or simply digging holes+scooping out the water.

Positives
- The dams are cheap to build, use local materials and dont require much maintenance. - Height of dam can be raised each yr to trap more sand, and more water.
