What?
- To cope with water insecurity, Chinese government planned $62 billion project that will transfer 44.8 billion cubic litres of water every yr from south to north of country. - 2 out of 3 planned routes have been completed(Central and Eastern Routes)

Advantages
- Provides water to people in cities of Beijing and Tianjin. - Allows industry to continue to develop, bringing wealth into country. - Provides water to irrigated farmland so crops can be grown.

Disadvantages - environmental
- Large areas have been flooded, destroying natural habitats. - Huge construction works are damaging fragile ecosystems.

Disadvantages - social
- Raising dam of Danjiangkou Reservoir flooding productive farmland+forced 345,000 people to move-most of them now have less land+poorly built housing. - Many recieved little compensation+are now unemployed.

Disadvantages - economic
- Water it supplies to Beijing is very expensive for consumers as the project has cost so much. - Project only supplies water to those who can afford it (urban poor+many people in rural areas have no access to the diverted water.

Disadvantages - water stress in south
- Water stress in south will increase, because so much water is diverted. - During severe droughts, there wont be enough drinking or irrigation water for 30 million local people. - E.g. drought in 2010-11 significantly reduced China's wheat yields.
