Direct confrontation
The suspect is told directly that they are thought to have committed the offence that they are being questioned for.

Chance to shift the blame
Offered some suggestions or justifications for what might have happened.

Do not allow denial of guilt.
Interrupt any attempts at denial.

Ignore suspect reasoning.
At this point the suspect will often try to give reasons why they could not have committed the crime. Try to use this to move towards a confession by ignoring them. Eventually the suspect will give up trying.

Reinforce sincerity
To ensure that the suspect is receptive by staying close, eye contact, first name use etc.

Move to offering alternatives.
The suspect will eventually become quieter and will listen more. At this point move towards offering alternatives.

The 'alternative question'
Pose the 'alternative question'. This gives the suspect two choices, one more socially acceptable, but both admitting certain guilt.

Admit in front of witness
Get the suspect to admit guilt in front of witnesses.

Document admission
Document the admission and get suspect to sign the confession to avoid retraction later.
