firm self confidence and above religious, political and foreign divisions. 1605: Gunpowder plot. he wrote Basilikon dorum-identifies the ideal king as one who does his duty to God and to his country and is also a man of spotless personal integrity

Charles I
Belief in divine right. insecure and poor communicator-never supposed to be king (older brother, Henry died). wrote declaration justifying decision to dissolve parliament

Henrietta Maria
Married Charles in 1625. Daughter of Henry IV of France. Catholic-unpopular in England (criticism from protestant majority). Duke of Buckingham caused estrangement fro Charles until 1628. wrote letters between king and queen.

Duke of Buckingham (George Villiers)
Favourite of James and close advisor to Charles in early reign. Assassinated in 1628. on the side of the king-dominated the court. led a number of failed foreign policy expeditions-hated by many.

William Laud
Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633. Impeached in 1641. Executed in 1645. Arminian-Charles admired his desire for order and ceremony. Introduced controversial reforms to the church-viewed as absolutist. Speech in star chamber at trial of Prynne (1637).

Thomas Wentworth (Earl of Strafford)
President of the Council of the North (1628). Sent to Ireland as Lord deputy (1632). Earl of Strafford (1640). Opposed Charles before Personal Rule. Switched sides after execution of Buckingham. Executed by Long Parliament (1641)-Charles very upset.

Sir Edward Coke
Hugely experienced lawyer and MP who had opposed James I's articulation of Divine Right. Retired in 1629 after being appointed sheriff so couldn't be an MP. 1621-helped draft Protestation. 1628- drafted Petition of Right.

Sir John Eliot
MP imprisoned in 1627 with 74 other gentry for refusing to contribute Forced Loan. Opposed King. Viewed as martyr after dying in prison.n Urged passage of Petition of Right and held in chair to hear 3 Resolutions (1629).

Denzil Holles
1629-held the speaker, Sir John Finch, in his chair and read out Parliament's declaration of grievances. Opposed to the King-apart from Strafford, who was married to his sister. One of the 5 members. Presbyterian.

William Prynne
Outspoken Puritan lawyer persecuted for beliefs in 1630s. Gained revenge-leading prosecution of Archbishop Laud. 1637-brought before Star Chamber for writing Puritan pamphlets. Histriomastix (1632)-attack on the theatre + Actresses='notorious whores'
