What is good about mining metal ores?
Useful products can be made, it provides local people with jobs and brings money into the area - this means services such as transport and health can be improved
1 of 6
What is bad about mining metal ore?
It is bad for the environment because it causes noise, scarring of the landscape and loss of habitats. Deep mine shafts are dangerous for a long time after the mine has been abandoned
2 of 6
Give two reasons why recycling metals is important
1. Mining and extracting metals takes a lot of energy, most of which comes from burning fossil fuels. 2. Fossil fuels are running out so it's important to conserve them. Burning them contributes to acid rain, global dimming and climate change
3 of 6
Give two more reasons why recycling metals is important
1. Recycling metals only uses a small fraction of the energy needed to mine and extract new metal. E.g. Recycling copper only takes 15% of the energy that's needed to mine and extract new copper. 2. Energy doesn't come cheap, recycling saves money
4 of 6
Give two more reasons why recycling metals is important
There's a finite amount of each metal in the Earth. Recycling conserves these resources. 2. Recycling metal cuts down on the amount of rubbish that gets sent to landfill.

What is ba about landfill?
Landfill takes up space and pollutes the surroundings.
