What are the Primary lymphoid organs and the Peripheral lymphoid organs?
Spleen, thymus, bone marrow. Lymph nodes.
1 of 13
What is innate immunity?
detects components ('antigens') shared by all pathogens. Fast (no lag), no memory
2 of 13
What is Adaptive immunity?
detects antigens specific to individual pathogens. Slower with lag phase, memory.
3 of 13
What is included in the innate immune system?
Physical (skin, epithelial barriers). Cellular (macrophages, neutrophils). Humoral (macromolecules, complement)
4 of 13
What is included in the adaptive immune system?
Cellular (b-lymphocytes, t-lymphocytes). Humoral (macromolecules, antibodies).
5 of 13
Examples of physical barriers in first line of defence?
Lysozyme in tears and other secretions. skin surface. removal of particles by cilia. mucus lining trachea.
6 of 13
What are the 4 major classes of innate immunity PRR (pattern recognition receptors)
Nucleotide oligomerisation domain (NOD- like receptors (NLRs). Toll-like receptors (TLRs). C-type lectin receptors (CLRs). RIG-like receptors (RLRs).
7 of 13
What is PAMPs?
pathogen associated molecular patterns- specific to micro-organism and normally essential for pathogen viability.
8 of 13
Natural killer cells are activated by interferon to kill virally-infected or tumourigenic cells- how does it do this?
by exocytosis of granules containing perforin and granzyme > induce apoptosis.
9 of 13
What is difference between B and T cells?
B-cells (attack outside of cells. T-cells (attack inside of cells).
10 of 13
Binding of antibodies to antigens inactivates antigen how?
Neutralisation, agglutination of microbes, precipitation of dissolved antigens- all of which enhances Phagocytosis by macrophages. Also, activation of complement system which leads to cell lysis.
11 of 13
What is an antigen?
any molecule that can be detected by adaptive immunity.
12 of 13
What is the name of the specific part of an antigen recognised by an antibody?
Epitope
