Kennan's Long Telegram
1946- Kennan writes from Russia describing communism as an "expansionistic foe" and a parasite feeding on the diseased tissue like that of the war-torn countries in Eastern Europe.

Containment Theory / Truman Doctrine
1947- Truman planned to prevent the spread of communism via financial support to vulnerable countries. E.g. $500 million per year to Japan, funding 80% of French was effort in Indochina, and giving money to Greece. Loss of China disproved this.

1950- New plan to "roll back" communism, put into action via the Korean war. Decided that force may need to be used and so money spent on miltary was increased.

1950-54- Senator McCarthy led anti-communist witch hunts and stirred up hysteria across the US, this put pressure on the government to act.

Domino Theory
1954- US decided that they needed to stop the next country in line from 'falling' to communism in order to prevent it spreading. The next domino was South Vietnam, hence increased involvement.
