What are perscriptivists?
Do not believe language should change/ evolve, there is an ideal standard that should be maintained.

What are descriptivists?
Describes change in language without judgement.

What is the crumbling castle?
The attitude that language is a precious commodity and needs to be preserved.

What is the damp spoon?
The attitude that change happens through laziness – people are aware that they may be using language incorrectly, but don’t bother to change.

The attitude that change happens without us realising – we ‘catch’ language use – this could be through the influence of TV or film.

adjusting your speech behaviour to become more like others. Can be UPWARD or DOWNWARD

adjusting your speech pattern to become more individual and less like others. Again, can be UPWARD or DOWNWARD

Received pronounciation (BBC, the Queen).

What is ethnicity?
the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition

What is stereotyping?
a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group (e.g. Cowboys and Indians)
