Cohort study

Follow a group of people over time to see who develops the disease. People exposed to risk factors, correlations recorded so links can be identified. Take a long time for condition to develop, study can take years, be expensive

Cas-control study

Group of people with a disease compared to control group. Information collected about risk factors that they have been exposed to, factors that develop disease identified. Investigate role of unknown factors. Control group should be representative.

Clear aim

Clearly stated hypothesis or aim. The design of the study must be appropriate to the stated hypothesis or aim and produce results that are valid and reliable.

Representative sample

Sample selected from the wider population that the study's conclusions can be applied to. Selection bias> participants in a study that are not representative of target population. Drop out rate> minimum. Individual differences accounted for.

Valid and reliable results

Must produce valid data, measurements provide information the study set out to measure. Reliable method used different times/people, produce similar results. Sample large> result not by chance. Effect of variables considered
