ICT unit 2 - Transfer of data in ICT systems

?
What are the 4 elements of an ICT network?
Communication devices, Network Software, Standards and Procedures and Data Transfer Media
1 of 29
What is a communication device?
piece of hardware that is needed to to turn stand-alone computers into networked computers
2 of 29
Name 4 Communication devices
Network Interface card, Hub, Switch and Router
3 of 29
What is Networking software?
systems software which allows computers connected together to function as a network
4 of 29
What is a network operating system?
this is a specialist network used to run a larger client server network, they can be quite complex as they need to coordinate the activities of all computers connected to the network
5 of 29
What is a Network management software?
this is a software which helps to look after many different computers and devices connected to the software, this could be making sure that all computers are up to date with their software with security patches to stop hackers.
6 of 29
What is a network
a group of computers that are able to communicate with eachother
7 of 29
What is Data Transfer Media?
the material through which data travels from one computer to another in a network.
8 of 29
What are some Examples of Data Transfer Media?
Metal Wires, Fibre optic cables, Wireless.
9 of 29
What are metal wires?
they are wires used in networking and offer a high transmission speed, but need need to be installed and this can be expensive
10 of 29
What are the three types of wires?
Unshielded twisted pair- help to cancel out interference, small network, Shielded pair - copper braiding protects data signals, Non-metal- sent by light, fibre optic
11 of 29
What are Standards and Procedures
standards are used to keep communication going in a network, they also ensure that any dta being transfered through the network can be understood by the reciever.Procedure should be used to keep these standards up.
12 of 29
Whats the difference between a LAN and a WAN?
A LAN- Local Area Network, and a WAN- Wide Area Network. LAN - confined to a building or site, ownershop of the communications equipment, WAN- Spread over geographical area, Third part communications equip used.
13 of 29
What is a network topology?
this is the arrangement of various elements in a computer network
14 of 29
what are the name of the 4 topologies?
Ring, Bus, Star,
15 of 29
What is a ring topology?
all cmputers are arranged in a circle, data sent by one computer is passed round the ring until sent to the correct computer
16 of 29
what is a bus topology?
all the devices are connected to the network and are connected using a common shared cable called the backbone.
17 of 29
what is a star topology?
uses a central connection point to connect all the devices on the network together. E.G router or hub
18 of 29
What is a mesh topology?
data sent using a mesh topology can take several different paths to its destination.
19 of 29
Advantages of Ring and Star?
Ring- Easy to add extra devices, each computer has the same access. Star- Fault tolerant, load tolerant, easy to add extra computers.
20 of 29
Advantages of Bus and Mesh?
Bus- cost effective, simple cables make it easy to install, easy to add extra devices Mesh- Easy to locate faults, fault tolerant.
21 of 29
Disadvantages of Ring and Star?
Ring- Faults aare hard to locate, only one path for data, Star- Higher costs lots of cable needed, dependent on central hub.
22 of 29
Disadvantages of Bus and Mesh?
Bus- only suited for small networks Mesh- Higher costs, harder to maintain
23 of 29
What is peer to peer network?
where each computer has the same status and they are able to communicate with each other on an equal footing.
24 of 29
What 2 types of networks are there?
Intranet, Extranet
25 of 29
What is an intranet?
private netowkr, uses same technology as the internet, only used by employees
26 of 29
what is an extranet?
not restricted to just employees, suppliers, customers and other trading partners can access it, can use private or public communications, same technology as the internet.
27 of 29
5 Advantages of networks?
ability to share files, lower software costs, improved security, easier to back up files, improved communications
28 of 29
3 disadvantages of networks ?
technical knowledge needed, lack of access when file server fails, cost
