What are different types of output?
Sound, Visual (Images, Video), Light, Text

What screens and monitors provide visual output?
Screens and Monitors (TB pp. 15 - 16) • CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor – Large monitors that take up a lot of room • TFT Monitor – Much smaller than CRT Monitors and a liquid display monitor

What large displays provide visual output?
Digital Projectors – Larger versions of the monitor output • Interactive Whiteboards – Touch sensitive so people can use a stylus to interact with it • Plasma Screens – Normally used as a TV but can be used as an alternative to a monitor output

What are small displays of visual output?
Mobile phone screens – Increasingly popular but Web designers need to produce pages that can be viewed on such a small screen • PDAs – Larger screens than Mobiles, Not so popular in the present day due to the increase in the use of Mobiles

Why is a laser printer used?
Good for documents, when colour is not required • Can print high quality documents quickly • Popular for office use

Why is an inkjet printer used?
Slower than Laser printers • Cheaper to buy but can be more expensive to run than Lasers • Can print in colour • Popular for home use

Why is a multi-function printer used?
Includes a built in scanner, so also doubles up as a photocopier • Suitable for home and office use • Uses laser and inkjet technology, though the latter is used more frequently

Why is a dot matrix printer used?
Very cheap printer • Black and White • Poor quality • Used in industrial situations where a large volume of prints are needed and quality is not needed

Why are plotters used?
Only used for specialist purposes (e.g. printing graphical and technical drawings) • Cannot produce full sized colour graphics

Why are professional printers used?
Economical when printing large numbers of a document • Produces excellent results • Good for when creating large documents

Why are photo printers used?
Only print 6 inch x 4 inch photographs • Convenient to carry around • Can connect to cameras via Bluetooth, cables or memory cards

Why are external speakers used?
Plugged into a computer to optimize the sound and quality produced in the sound card • Can vary in size, quality, appearance and volumes

Why are built-in speakers used?
Most computers have speakers built in that play relatively low quality sound and has a limited volume • Often not good enough for gamers, who instead would prefer to use external speakers

Why are headphones used?
Good for public places as other people cannot hear what someone is listening to • Also good for jobs such as call centres where lots of calls are being made and the noise needs to be kept to a minimum • Attached via a cable to a device

Why are wireless headphones used?
Like headphones except uses Bluetooth technology to eliminate the need for cables. • Can be used with a phone so that a user can use the phone while driving

What special purpose outputs are there and what do they do?
Monitors-Able to increase font size, Magnify display, Adjust colour contrast between text and background and resolution, “Alternative text” for images on websites. Sound-audio button for text, Spell check set to audio. Printers-Braille printers

What should you consider when choosing an output device?
Monitors & Screens:What kind of image will be viewed?(Facebook page), Where will it be viewed? (Library), Who'll view it? (16 year old girl), Will screen be used to view the internet? (In this example, yes).

What are usually the two most imortant things to think about when choosing an output device?
In most situations involving outputs, a monitor or screen will be required, and the most common decisions required to undertake will be the size and resolution

What should you consider when choosing an output device?
Printers:What'll be printed?(English essay), How many documents will be printed?(Ten pages), What media?(A4 paper), Who'll use the printer?(Family of four, each with their own computer. If lots of people share a printer, a network may be a good idea.
