What is an indirect data source?
Data that is used for a purpose other than its original purpose.
2 of 13
Benefits of a direct data source.
Data should be completely relevant as the source has been designed for the specific purpose.
3 of 13
Drawbacks of a direct data source.
Data collection document has to be designed, data has to be gathered and processed, time consuming and expensive.
4 of 13
Data verification methods.
Proofreading, double entry.
5 of 13
Main features of a typical Internet browser.
Converts HTML code to display a web page, navigation buttons / hyperlinks, history / bookmarks, address bar to enter URL, search engine for search criteria, user setting can be set / plugins / security settings.
6 of 13
OCR software data input.
A laser is passed over the [newspaper cutting] converting its light and dark areas into binary data. OCR software can distinguish between types of content (e.g. text, tables). OCR program matches text elements with an internal library of letters etc
7 of 13
Computer software to enhance photographs.
Brightness/darkness / contrast / colour saturation/hue can be altered, image can be cropped / straightened, filters can be applied, parts can be copied / moved / blurred.
8 of 13
JPEG main features.
Uses image compression to reduce file size (at the possible expense of image quality). The degree of 'lossiness' can be varied to balance the file size against the quality of the image.
9 of 13
Bitmap main features.
Each pixel in the image is represented using 8/16/24/32 bits. No compression is used resulting in larger file sizes.
10 of 13
RAM purpose.
To store data currently in use before it is saved / store the current application temporarily.
11 of 13
Cache memory purpose.
Store the most recently accessed data and the most frequently accessed data so that it can be accessed again with faster transfer speed.
12 of 13
How data is written to and read from a hard disk.
Hard disk contains a stack of disks and a set of red/white heads, data is written magnetically in sectors
