ICT - Chapter 12 - An ICT System and its Components

?
What is a system?
Any set of activities that involves input, output and processing.
1 of 13
What is an ICT system (4 points)?
A system that uses any form of digital technology. The output goes directly to a human or another ICT system. It is a combination of hardware and software. It has programs to convert the system's inputs into outputs.
2 of 13
What is input?
Entering the data into the computer. For example, bank account numbers or bar code numbers.
3 of 13
What is processing?
Manipulating input data into information that is understandable and useful to the user.
4 of 13
What is output?
Presenting the information to the user in a form the user can understand. It must have a context.
5 of 13
What are the components of an ICT system?
Data, Hardware, Software, Information, Procedures, People
6 of 13
What is data?
Raw fact and figures. By itself it has no useful meaning to a human user.
7 of 13
What is hardware?
The physical components of an ICT system that work on input, processing and output. This includes the processor, CPU, RAM and ROM and Peripheral devices.
8 of 13
What is software?
Computer programs. They make up the instructions that allow the computer to actually carry out the processing.
9 of 13
What is information?
Data that has been processed to give it meaning to a human being. An itemised receipt would be an example of this.
10 of 13
What are procedures?
Procedures have to be undertaken to make sure the system runs smoothly. For example, connecting together a camera and computer to allow pictures to be transferred from one to the other.
11 of 13
What is archiving?
The removal of data that is not currently in use to an offline file.
12 of 13
What role do people have in ICT systems?
Most data is entered by humans. Information output is used by humans. They also need to carry out general procedures like backing up, logging on and changing parts of the computer.
