Ice On The Land Key Words

Geography A AQA GCSE - Physical. Up to end of 2013 (I think, anyway, my exam is in May/June 2013).

All of the key words you need and maybe even more!

?
An environment that is frozen during winter and where only low-lying frost resistant plants can grow.
Tundra
1 of 28
The last ice age.
Pleistocene epoch
2 of 28
Inputs to the glacier budget. E.g. Snowfall.
Accumulation
3 of 28
Outputs from the glacier budget. E.g. Melting.
Ablation
4 of 28
The front of a glacier.
Snout
5 of 28
The balance between the inputs and outputs of a glacier.
Glacier Budget
6 of 28
A period of ice advance associated with falling temperatures.
Glacial Period
7 of 28
A period of ice retreat associated with rising temperatures.
Interglacial
8 of 28
A large body of ice over 50000km^3 extent.
Ice sheet
9 of 28
A smaller body of ice usually found in mountainous regions.
Ice cap
10 of 28
A finger of ice, usually extending downhill from an ice cap and occupying a valley.
Glacier
11 of 28
The sandpaper effect caused by the weight of ice scouring the valley floor and sides, using the angular rock material trapped underneath.
Abrasion
12 of 28
Deep scratches/grooves caused by abrasion.
Striations
13 of 28
A sharp ridge of rock that's found between two main areas of glacial erosion.
Arête
14 of 28
A valley with steep sides and a flat base, once occupied by a glacier.
Glacial Trough
15 of 28
A long narrow lake on the floor of a glacial valley. The valley is often blocked by a terminal moraine.
Ribbon Lake
16 of 28
An accumulation of unsorted debris formed by a glacier. This can occur in a formerly or currently glaciated area. They can range in size from glacial flour to large boulders.
Moraine
17 of 28
Material dragged underneath the glacier, usually picked up by abrasion and left behind when the ice melts.
Ground Moraine
18 of 28
When a tributary glacier joins a main glacier, their two lateral moraines merge to form a single one. When the glacier melts, a line of sediment along the base of the valley remains.
Medial Moraine
19 of 28
Huge amounts of material build up at the snout, forming a high ridge. It represents the furthest extent of the glacier's advance.
Terminal Moraine
20 of 28
Masses of snow, ice and rock that move downhill at up to 300km/h
Avalanches
21 of 28
A type of weathering found in glacial environments
Freeze Thaw Weathering
22 of 28
The slippage of ice along a curved surface.
Rotational Slip
23 of 28
The microscopic movement of particles or layers of ice within the glacier.
Internal Deformation
24 of 28
A process of glacial erosion where individual rocks are removed from the valley floor or sides as water freezes them to the glacier.
Plucking
25 of 28
Meltwater at the bottom of the glacier causes sudden movements.
Base Slip
26 of 28
Elongated hills of glacial deposits
Drumlins
27 of 28
An hollow in a mountain formed by stones being dragged over the surface by a glacier moving downwards.
Corrie
28 of 28
