Fragile environment
An environment that is easily unbalanced and damaged by natural or human factors
1 of 34
Accumulation
Inputs to the glacier budget, such as snowfall and avalanches
2 of 34
Glacial trough
A wide, steel sided valley eroded by a glacier
3 of 34
Responsible tourism
The idea of encouraging a balance between the demands of tourism and the need to protect the environment
4 of 34
Medical moraine
A ridge of sediment running down the center of a glacier formed when two lateral moraines merge
5 of 34
Terminal moraine
A high ridge running across the valley representing the maximum advance of a glacier
6 of 34
Glacier
A finger of ice usually extending downhill from an icecap and occupying a valley
7 of 34
Glacier budget
The balance between the inputs (accumulation) and the outputs (ablation) of a glacier
8 of 34
Ice sheet
A large body of ice over 50,000 km squared in extent
9 of 34
Interglacial
A period of ice retreat associated with rising temperatures (this is us now)
10 of 34
Glacial period
A period of ice advance associated with falling temperatures
11 of 34
Avalanche
A rapid downhill movement of a mass of snow, ice and rocks, usually in mountainous environment
12 of 34
Ice cap
A smaller body of ice usually found in mountainous regions
13 of 34
Sustainable management
A form of management that ensures that developments are long lasting and non-harmful to the environment
14 of 34
Pyramidal Peak
A sharp edged mountain peak
15 of 34
Snout
The front of a glacier
16 of 34
Loose snow avalanche
A powdery avalanche usually originating from a singe point
17 of 34
Ablation
Outputs from the glacier budget such as melting
18 of 34
Bulldozing
The pushing of deposited sediment at the snout by the glacier as it advances
19 of 34
Moraine
Sediment carried and deposited by the ice
20 of 34
Hanging valley
A tributary glacial trough perched up on the side of a main valley, often marked by a waterfall
21 of 34
Hummock
A small area of raised ground, rather like a large molehill
22 of 34
Rotational slip
Slippage of ice along a curved surface
23 of 34
Drumlin
An egg shaped hill found on the floor of a glacial trough
24 of 34
Abrasion
A process of erosion involving the wearing away of the valley floor and sides (glaciers) and the shoreline (coastal zones)
25 of 34
Plucking
A process of glacial erosion where individual rocks are plucked away from the valley floor or sides as the water freezes them to the glacier
26 of 34
Slab avalanche
A large-scale avalanche formed when a slab of ice and snow breaks away from the main ice pack
27 of 34
Ribbon lake
A long narrow lake at the bottom of a glacial trough
28 of 34
Long Profile
This shows the changes in height and shape along the length of a glacier, from its source high in the mountains to its snout
29 of 34
Arête
A knife-edged ridge, often formed between two corries
30 of 34
Corrie
A deep depression on a hillside with a steep back wall, often containing a lake
31 of 34
Truncated Spurs
An eroded interlocking spur characterized by having a very steep cliff
32 of 34
Lateral moraine
A ridge of frost-shattered sediment running along the edge of a glacier where it meets the valley side
33 of 34
El Nino effect
El Nino events are large climate disturbances which are rooted in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and occur every 3 to 7 years. They have a strong impact on the continents around the tropical Pacific, and some climatic influence on half of the planet.
