Ice Baths

What is an ice bath
Involves sitting in ice cold water for between 5 and 20 minutes

What do they do?
Causes blood vessels to tighten (vasoconstricton) and descreases metabolic activity

What does it do for injury?
Restricts blood flow to the injured area which reduces swelling. Also breaks down tissue and aids muscle repair.

Effect of it
After leaving the ice bath the injured area is flooded with new blood (vasodilation) and fresh oxygen removes lactic acid.

Is it a good method to use?
Yes, however some studies suggest that ice baths have limited value to injuries
