Hydrocarbons

?
What is a Hydrocarbon made of?
It is made of hydrogen and carbon ONLY!
1 of 12
What is an Alkane?
They are saturated hydrocarbons.
2 of 12
How is crude oil formed?
It is formed over millions of years as plankton die they are buried under mud. Over time layers and layers of rock are formed on top. creating conditions (high pressure + temperature + absence of oxygen) to make crude oil.
3 of 12
What must you put crude oil in to make it useful?
A fractional column.
4 of 12
what type of bonds do all carbons have in alkanes?
Single covalent bond.
5 of 12
What is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH(2n+2)
6 of 12
What is crude oil an element?
No. It is made up of different compounds.
7 of 12
What two types of chains are there in hydrocarbons?
Short and Long
8 of 12
What properties do short chains have?
Low boiling point, higher volatility, low viscosity, higher flammability.
9 of 12
What properties do long chains have?
High boiling point, lower volatility, high viscosity, lower flammability.
10 of 12
Example of a short chain hydrocarbon and a use for it:
Petrol. It can be used as a fuel for cars.

Example of a long chain hydrocarbon and a use for it:
Residue. It can be used for laying roads or as a lubricant on machinery.
