Arose out of criticism of the unhealthy development in psychoanalysis and a dissatisfaction with the determinsitic and overly scientific behaviourist approach.

The self you wish to be.

Who you actually are.

Congruence
A term used to describe a state in which a person’s ideal self and actual experience are consistent or very similar.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory of human motivation. The needs are presented in a five-level sequence, where basic needs (e.g. for food and shelter) have to be met before higher psychological needs (e.g. for esteem and self-actualisation).

Conditional Positive Regard
Are requirements that the individual feels they need to meet to be loved. Used to explain behaviour.

Unconditional Positive Regard
Where they are accepted and loved for who they are. Positive regard is not withdrawn if the person does something wrong or makes a mistake.

Humanistic Approach (Free Will vs Determinsim)
FREE WILL: Only approach to advocate existence of free will. we choose our path in life.

Humanistic Approach (Nature vs Nurture)
NATURE: People have an innate drive to be the best they can be. NURTURE: Environment helps this process.

Humanistic Approach (Holism vs Reductionism)
HOLISM: Doesn't reduce behaviour to a single cause. Looks at a person an a whole.

Humanistic Approach (Idiographic vs Nomothetic)
IDIOGRAPHIC: Focuses on the uniqueness of individuals - no point in generalising.

Humanistic Approach (Scientific Methods)
UNSCIENTIFIC: Doesn't believe in scientific methods

Humanistic Approach (Extrapolation_
NO ANIMAL EXTRAPOLATION: Doesn't conduct animal research. Looks at human development + sees no point in looking at animals.
