Human Geography - Health

?
What is HIV and AIDS?
HIV is a retrovirus carried in the human blood stream that essentially destroys white blood cells. This cause white blood cell levels to drop and the body loses immunity (AIDS)
1 of 12
How are AIDS spread?
It is transferred between humans primarily when bodily fluids are exchanged. This could be due to infected needles, drug abuse, pregnancy or poor quality health care
2 of 12
How are people affected by HIV/AIDS?
A low white blood cell count leaves the body's immune deficiency low and a person becomes more susceptible to disease. A person's life expectancy may suddenly decrease. The actual effects of HIV/AIDS can take many years to appear after infection.

Vaccines
This is actually many years away (potentially impossible), controlling the spread and caring for those infected is the only way to combat it.
5 of 12
Antirtroviral Drugs
Can help to alleviate some of its effects and increase the lifespan of an infected person. These drugs are widely available but are expensive (not widely available in LEDCs)
6 of 12
Prediction
This can allow us to allocate resources in specific areas which are at a high risk of infection. If prediction is combined with an effective prevention programme, the disease could potentially be wiped out.
7 of 12
Education
Considered the most powerful method of control. In many LEDCs people cannot afford it. Even in developed countries it is difficult for women, homosexuals, etc to access it - those who may be particularly vulnerable to it. Contraception can help.

1985
Fairly Rare: Central Africa (Zimbabwe, Zambia) 5-15% infected. US and Brazil 0.1-0.5%

1995
Spread globally: 0.5-1.1% in America, South Africa 5-34%, Spain 0.5-1%

2005
America + South America remained the same. Southern Africa 15-34%. Russia 5-15%. Also become prevalent in India and Mediterranean countries.
