Human Defences Against Disease

?
How does the body prevent the entry of pathogens?
The trachea contains goblet cells which produce mucu that traps particles and bacteria. The hairs in the nose trap particles that may contain pathogens. The dead layer of skin makes it hard for the pathogens to pass through.
1 of 8
What happens during phagocytosis?
The white blood cell surrounds the pathogen, then it engulfs it and finally it digests the microorganism.
2 of 8
Other that phagocytosis how else do white blood cells defend against pathogens?
Specific antibodies attach onto antigens, causing microorganisms to clump together so that they can be digested by the white blood cells
3 of 8
What are antibiotics?
They are medicines that kill bacteria inside the body. However, they cannot destroy viruses
4 of 8
What is MRSA?
It is a strain of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics

What are the following drugs and where to they come from: a) Digitalis b) Aspirin c) Penicillin
a) It is a heart drug that originates from foxgloves b) It is a painkiller that originates from willow c) It was discovered by Alexander Fleming from the Penicillium mould.

What happens during double-blind trials?
Some patients are given a placebo and some patients are given the drug. Patients are allocated randomly to the two groups. Neither the doctors nor the patients know who has received a placebo and who has received the drug.
7 of 8
What can monoclonal antibodies be used for?
They can be used in pregnancy tests, to bind to the hormone HCG found in urine during early pregnancy. To treat some diseases, e.g. in cancer they can be used to deliver a radioactive substance, a toxic drug, or chemical that stops cells dividing.
