A hazard is something that could potentially harm someone or cause an adverse health effect

What is an environmental hazard with examples?
- Something in the environment that could cause harm
- Eg: Uneven floors, wet flooring, furniture in the way of a corridor

- Medical or bodily fluids that are not disposed of or used properly
- Eg: Used needles, blood samples, bodily fluids

- Medicines or cleaning materials
- Eg: Incorrect medication dose/times, cleaning products stored incorrectly, wrong medication given

- Stress or fatigue
- Eg: Challenging behaviour, long working hours, abuse/bullying

- Excessive loud noise or radiation
- Eg: Continuous use of vacuums, unnecesary exposure to gamma/x-rays

- A hazard that can damage muscles/bones
- Eg: Incorrect manual handling, RSI from overuse of DSE incorrectly

- Temperature, high noise levels, travel
- Eg: travelling long distances, too hot which can cause dehydration, loud noises can damage hearing

- Excessive working hours, lack of supervision
- Eg: Tiredness, lack of concentration, no supervision

- The workplace or setting not being secure
- Eg: No door locks, faulty alarm systems, lack of fire doors/alarms
